As parents, we often think our children are “just playing.” Roblox, Fortnite, and other games look like fun: laughter with friends, teamwork, creativity. But behind the screen, something deeper is happening. These platforms are designed to keep children hooked, teaching them that belonging and happiness come with a price tag.
I hear parents say:
“He won’t stop playing.”
“She only feels accepted if she buys skins.”
“It’s just a phase, isn’t it?”
But what’s really happening is that children are practicing dependence. They are learning to equate value with external validation. The game becomes the teacher: If you want to belong, pay. If you want happiness, chase it outside yourself.
In coaching, this is a powerful conversation. We explore together:
• How do we protect our children’s inner confidence in a world that sells them belonging?
• What tools can we give them to build resilience, so they know happiness is already within?
• How do we set boundaries without creating rebellion or guilt?
• And, most importantly: how can parents stay connected, so their influence is stronger than the algorithm’s pull?
This isn’t about banning games or living in fear. It’s about awareness, balance, and building stronger foundations of self-worth.
Together at Axiom, we can shift the narrative from “my child is trapped” to “my child knows who they are, even when the screen tries to tell them otherwise.
